Texas Independence has strong ties to Bowie County

By Kenny Mitchell

Publisher

As Texas celebrates its Independence Day this weekend, it kindles a spirit of pride across the state and we pause to remember those who fought and died for that independence and those who fought great odds to settle this region we call home, many of them with ties and roots to Bowie County.

As stated in the excerpts of a speech made by a local historian, the list reads as a who’s who of local, state and national history.

A New Student Council is inducted at Hubbard

The Hubbard 13-14 Student Council conducted a special Installation Service officiated by Hubbard Superintendent, Traci Drake. The guest speaker Dr. John Booth shared a challenging and enlightening charge to students for their future. Dr. Booth spoke about the three T’s. First you must increase and be on the cutting edge of Technology. He stated that other countries have surpassed some of the expectations that have caused tremendous intellectual advancements. Secondly, he said the content of the core subjects will come from the classroom but we have to start thinking outside the box. Students have to “think”, we have to brainstorm and become more creative.  Last Dr. Booth shared the importance of team work. He went into much detail about how working together builds character.

Kumpe’s new book brings the Phantom Killer back to town in a story of hope

The Phantom Killer of 1946 didn’t kill Pam Kumpe’s friend, but in 1981, the Original Night Stalker in California did.
The novel “Untied Shoelace” tells the story of finding hope when the clickety-clack of death knocks on lives.
In the novel, a hobo girl crosses the path of the Phantom Killer in Texarkana.
Author Pam Kumpe is handing out copies of her novel “Untied Shoelace” to her homeless friends on Saturday, February 22, 2014 at 9 a.m. at Church under the Bridge. This will take place at Third and Fourth Street under the bridge in Texarkana, Texas. This is the anniversary date of the first Phantom Killer attack, 68 years ago. Between February and May in 1946, there were five murders and three attacks. Some link all eight incidents, others do not.
