New Boston’s Catherine Lyles was recently honored  at the NAACP’s 2013 Freedom Fund Awards Banquet as this year’s recipient of the John Jay Jones, Sr. Community Service Award.

Jones, Sr. Community Award represents an individual's benevolent goodwill toward the love of humanity and is given to those who excel at giving aid  to those in need and providing generosity and helpfulness to those around them, especially the underprivileged, all the while engaging in institutional relief for the underprivileged and community service.
The event featured a keynote address by Myrlie Evers-Williams , the wife of murdered civil rights leader Medgar Evers.
Lyles was honored for her years of community service going back to decades of teaching students in New Boston and being involved in a host of local organizations.
