O Holy Night

The story of Jesus’ birth filled the streets of downtown New Boston Saturday night with the annual Christmas parade and its theme of O Holy Night. Pictured, Tristen Burks as Mary, Kipton Burks as Baby Jesus, Kooper Hilton as a wiseman and Zach Burks in the back as Joseph ride one of the many themed floats in this year’s parade.

Breaking Holy Ground

Calvary Baptist Church of Simms, Texas held a ground-breaking service on Sunday, November 27, 2016 for their new Calvary Multi-Purpose Building. Building Committee members Kenneth Barron (Deacon), Bobby Sellers (Deacon), Mike Amason, Jr., Steve Hawkins (Deacon), Tommy Caraway, Pastor Aaron Crawford, Shane Pope, Aron Crabtree (Deacon), and Alan McEntire held a special prayer over the project that when finished will consist of a full-size gymnasium, fellowship area, kitchen, children’s chapel, youth meeting sanctuary, game room, conference center and several class rooms. The building will be a much-needed asset to the church and community. It will be used for several different functions, mainly for the Calvary Adult, Teens and Children’s ministries as they carry forth the Great Commission. The building will also be available to the Community for various purposes. The church is in prayer to reach their goal of a June, 2017 completion.

Planning for success

Members of the State Bank leadership team gathered at the Williams House Museum for their annual planning meeting just before the holidays. State Bank, now with three branches serving Northeast Texas, Southeast Oklahoma, and Southwest Arkansas recently announced plans to open two additional branches, one in Nash and another in Texarkana, subject to regulatory approval.

Col. Iverson Shavers celebrates 99th birthday

Surrounded by friends and family at his house west of DeKalb, retired Army Colonel Iverson Shavers celebrated his 99th year of life on Thursday, October 20.  A life that began as a farm boy only a mile from his present house and saw him travel all over the world in military service, finally returning home to Garland Community, west of DeKalb, where he has resided since retiring from active duty in 1962.
After returning to DeKalb, Shavers raised cattle and was active for years with the local Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service, Oak Grove Water Board and the DeKalb School Board.

Texarkana College to Host Shear Madness- An Avant Garde Hair Competition and Fashion Show

Texarkana College Cosmetology will host the seventh annual Shear Madness Avant Garde Hair and Fashion Show, on Thursday, November 3, 2016, from 1pm to 4pm on the Texarkana College main campus in the Truman Arnold Student Center.

Cosmetology students battle it out on the runway in a fierce competition that pushes students to embrace a creative edge. Using human hair, students create elaborate designs to adorn a runway model that represents an all-out design theme.

"Shear Madness offers a unique opportunity for students to experience an industry level design competition," Brandon Dixon, TC Cosmetology Instructor said. "The annual competition provides a chance for students to embrace creative design concepts to elevate their talents in ways they never thought possible."

Cosmetology students from across Northeast Texas, Southwest Arkansas, and nearby schools in Louisiana have been invited to participate in the competition.

On November 9, 2016 the Alzheimer’s Alliance Tri-State Area will partner with UAMS Schmieding Home Caregiver Training Program to host a come-and-go Caregiver Appreciation Day at the Texarkana Regional Center on Aging.
