DeKalb ISD launches new mobile app

The DeKalb Independent School District has launched a new mobile application for smart devices.
Developed in partnership with Gabbart Communications, the DISD Mobile App is officially live and available to students, staff, families and community members. The app is compatible with both Apple and Android devices and can be downloaded for free by searching “DeKalb ISD” in your device’s app store.
Dr. John Booth, Superintendent of DeKalb ISD said. “One of the DeKalb Independent School District goals is to become more transparent and user-friendly. We are excited about the possibilities this App will offer us. It will be a convenient way to communicate with students, parents, and community members quickly and effectively”.

Brandy Crawford celebrates her 300th win as volleyball coach

A local volleyball coach is celebrating her 300th career win.  Brandy Crawford is in her 21st year of coaching, with 17 of those years as a head volleyball coach, and as of press time, will have made her 14th playoff appearance.

Longtime cornerstone of New Boston dies

Long-time New Boston business owner, civic leader, and philanthropist Hiram Douglas Shute died Thursday, October 11, 2018 at at Texarkana assisted living facility.  Mr. Shute was 90.

Hiram Shute was born March 18, 1928 in Dierks, Arkansas.  He and his wife Inez were married for fifty years before her death in 2000, and had two sons, David and the late Lee Shute.  Mr. Shute, or “Granddaddy” to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.  He was a United States Army veteran where he ranked as Sergeant, and a United States Air Force Veteran, where he ranked as Captain.  He was also a member of the Texarkana area Military Affairs Committee.

Arrest made in New Boston hit and run

On Monday, October 11, 2018 New Boston Police Department officers responded to a hit and run accident
involving a 7 year old child. The accident occured in the 900 block of East Lion Drive in New Boston. Later in the day
investigators spoke to a Mr. William Beetner who was a person of interest.
On Friday, October 19th, 2018 Mr. Beettner was asked by Lt. Millwood and Investigator Huggins to come in and
clarify inconsistencies in his previous story from the day of the accident. At that time he admitted to hitting something
in the road with his vehicle and leaving.
On Monday, October 22nd, 2018 a warrant was issued for William Beettner, age 31, of New Boston Texas. The
charge was for accident involving personal injury. At 8:53 a.m. Mr. Beettner turned himself in. He was then taken
to Bistate in Texarkana where a bond will be set.

Pedestrian hit by car last night near Simms

According to a report by the Texas DPS, at approximately 7:48 p.m. Wednesday night, troopers responded to a vehicle vs. pedestrian crash on Hwy 67.   The investigation revealed that he driver of a Toyota Tundra pickup, Bruce Wayne Mears, 59, of Simms was traveling west on Hwy-67 when he struck a pedestrian, Laila Lehto Minor, 65, of Simms who was walking in the middle of the westbound outside lane.  The impact caused Minor to be airlifted to Wadley Hospital in Texarkana in serious condition.  Mears was not injured as a result of the crash.  There are no further details at this time, the investigation is on-going. 

Despite conflicting reports, the accident was not a hit-and-run, and Mears did return to the scene,

New Boston student struck by hit and run driver this morning

According to New Boston Police-

On 10/11/18 at approximately 7:00am a  7-year old New Boston ISD student was struck by a vehicle waiting to get on the school bus at the corner of Lion Drive and Wherry street. The suspect did not stop and left the scene. Witnesses described the suspect vehicle as a grey Chevrolet HHR.

The vehicle was last seen turning North on to HWY 8 from Lion Drive. Anyone with any information is urged to contact the New Boston Police Department at 903-628-3771.

The victim was transported by ambulance to local hospital.

Texarkana College trustees name Dr. Jason Smith as lone finalist to replace James Henry Russell

Texarkana College Board of Trustees voted today to name Dr. Jason Smith as the lone finalist for college president. After a state-mandated 21-day waiting period, Trustees will formally vote to hire Smith as the ninth president of Texarkana College on November 5, 2018, with an anticipated start date of January 1, 2019.  Smith currently serves as superintendent of Pleasant Grove Independent School District in Texarkana, Texas.

“Dr. Smith is a great fit for this vital role at Texarkana College,” said Kyle Davis, president of TC’s Board of Trustees. “Not only is he a lifelong educator with proven leadership in establishing a collaborative culture of excellence and student success, but he also understands the importance of developing community engagement that underpins an institution’s values, vision and goals. During his time in our community, he has quickly been recognized as an outstanding regional leader who is endorsed by several major donors and supporters of TC.”

Manna Kitchen under new management

The Manna Kitchen is hustling and bustling these days.  Under new management since Labor Day, new director Sue Anderson says they’ve gone from providing meals for just over 50 people, to now 80.  Volunteers work diligently on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays to cook, package, and deliver meals to local residents who are unable to cook for themselves.

Bowie County Felon Guilty of Firearms Violations

A 79-year-old Hooks, Texas, man has pleaded guilty to federal firearms violations in the Eastern District of Texas, announced U.S. Attorney Joseph D. Brown today.

 

Robert D. Whittington, III, a retired Lt. Colonel with the U.S. Army, pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm and felon in possession of ammunition today before U.S. Magistrate Judge Caroline Craven.
