Women for the Arts Host Celebrity Art Auction Benefitting Texarkana Regional Arts & Humanities Center

As unique as the organization, Texarkana’s Women for the Arts (WFA) provides volunteer and financial support for the programs, shows, and exhibits brought to our community by the Texarkana Regional Arts and Humanities Council. WFA’s signature fundraising event, Party with Picassos, is scheduled for Saturday, March 24, 2018, and will be held at the Texarkana Convention Center. Cocktails and art viewing begin at 6:30 p.m. with the evening’s main festivities beginning at 7 p.m. The 19th annual event has become a premiere event for the four-state region raising close to one-million dollars to support TRAHC’s mission.

Party with Picassos event organizers, Robin Proctor and Judy Jones, said the “Picassos” event has grown since its inception and builds in popularity with party-goers each year because of its unique format.

Report of Disturbance on Texarkana College Campus

March 8, 2018, Texarkana, TX- At approximately 8:50 a.m. today, an altercation occurred on the Texarkana College campus. TC administrators immediately reported the incident to the TC campus police, who responded to the situation within two minutes.  A suspect, who is a TC student, is in custody and there is no threat to the campus. Two firearms were found in the possession of this subject.  The subject did hold a valid license to carry permit.  It is alleged that the subject displayed the firearm at some point during the altercation which is not allowed under the license to carry.  The suspect is being transported to the Bi-State Justice Building for processing.

Administration changes pending at DeKalb ISD

The DeKalb ISD Board of Trustees is expected to address some administrative staff changes during its special called meeting Monday night.

Those changes are expected to be a move of Middle School Principal Clayton Little to the same position at DeKalb High, and Athletic Director Eddy May taking over the role of Middle School Principal.

NBHS students earn top prize in TxDOT competition

New Boston High School students show off the $1,500 check they received for winning the TxDOT Traffic Safety Public Service Announcement competition held Wednesday in Jefferson.  The students created a video about the hazards of distracted driving and beat out 12 other schools from the TxDOT Atlanta District which covers a nine-county area of Northeast Texas.  The funds will go towards this year’s Project Celebration at the school. New threats at DeKalb ISD handled by police

Two separate incidents of threats of violence have been reported at the DeKalb ISD today, one involving a social media post and another where a statement was written on a high school bathroom wall.

DeKalb police and school officials note that these are separate incidents and are in no way related to each other, and that there is no active threat to students at any De Kalb ISD campus.

DPS Honors Bravery, Exceptional Efforts

AUSTIN – Last week, the Texas Public Safety Commission (PSC) and Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Director Steven McCraw presented one Medal of Valor, two Lifesaving Awards, three Director’s Awards, and 64 Director’s Citations at an award ceremony in Austin. Many awards were related to Hurricane Harvey response efforts. Additionally, a Texas Ranger and a Driver License employee were recognized for their distinguished DPS careers.

Arrest made for Terror Threat at New Boston Middle School

A student at New Boston Middle School has been arrested on a charge of Terroristic Threat after n investigation was conducted by New Boston police.

New Boston ISD officials were made aware of a situation where a student was reported to have made threatening statements. Upon receiving the information, Superintendent Dr. Rose Mary Neshyba called New Boston police and turned the situation over to them. On Sunday Dr. Neshyba issued an official statement making the community aware of the situation. Dr. Neshyba also stated that the district was made aware of the threat over the weekend, after school hours.

BCSO Drug Bust

According to a statement just released by Bowie County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Jeff Neal, members of the Bowie County Sheriff’s Office have been investigating Mathew Tyler Smith for allegedly trafficking substantial quantities of marijuana to the Texarkana area. On 2-19-2018, information was obtained that Matthew Smith would be delivering marijuana to the Super Wal-Mart at 4000 New Boston Road Texarkana, TX.

Smith was supposed to deliver the marijuana in a white 2-door Nissan Altima that belongs to his girlfriend Cassie Rena Scott. Deputy Westin Fannin conducted surveillance on Interstate 30 westbound at Richmond Road in anticipation of the suspect vehicle. At approximately 12:09pm, he observed the white Nissan Altima pass by on the way to Wal-Mart on New Boston Road. A probable cause stop was conducted on the vehicle and Deputy Fannin attempted to make contact with the driver Matthew Smith and the passenger Cassie Scott.
